FOSTORIA RAILPARK UPDATE
April 22, 2013
Saturday, May 18 B&O RR Historical Society mini-convention was a wonderful event. Mr. Charles Foster (our own Leonard Skonecki) came back to life after many decades and was the first speaker for the day. As always, Leonard was interesting, especially for a really dead guy !!!
Sunday FRPS went to Durand Michigan for a train show. We are just as close to Durand as we are to Springfield, OH in driving distances from Fostoria. Love to go to Durand, their beautifully restored depot is a treat to see over and over again. Talked to many people we already know and met more railfans too. Chamber Director Pamela Smith and Jayden McCumber were at the show too.
The NKP & C&O diamonds were completed and they opened up Columbus Ave. on Saturday, May 18. You can now drive to the D&N bldg. parking lot from the north but not from the south. The Poet/Mixing center transfer line is being replaced and therefore, the tracks are closed on Columbus Ave. We were told they would be open by Friday, May 24 but cannot confirm that, assume it will be closed over Memorial Day weekend. Will advise when we have more info.
The port-a-pot and trash can are at the D&N bldg. parking lot for your convenience. The story on the tons of concrete found on the rail park property. Years ago there was a concrete company located on the west side of Poplar St. inside the triangle where the numerous buildings are. The concrete company apparently cleaned out their equipment on the rail park location. What a surprise to find this buried.
Walter Pfefferle, is working on our FRPS website and has set up a Facebook page named Fostoria Rail Park. Walter will be our Twitter man too. (see links below). Thank you Walter, we need your help !!!!! Any comments or suggestions can be sent to email@example.com
Those of you who are FRPS members, our meeting is Thursday, May 23, today !!!! 7:00 p.m. at the LE&W depot, 128 W. North St. Please attend. Operation Lifesaver is an important part of FRPS especially with the train traffic Fostoria has. Safety Town is a 2-week program setup to teach young children common sense in regards to cars, bikes, and trains. We will be providing Operation Lifesaver presentations at Bowling Green, Defiance and Oregon, OH. If your organization would like a presentation, please advise if you are in the area. Do not plan on traveling to Canada or PA at the present time.
April 15th 2013
The official notice to proceed for the park was issued on April 15. Work is progressing well and the entrance off of Poplar Street has had some work begun as the Columbus Ave. temporary entrance is not usable with the NKP and C&O tracks being torn up for replacement.
The open air pavilion is going to be quite nice. The platform will be higher than we thought so viewing the B&O will be better than expected. Whitta Construction has unearthed a lot of buried concrete on the property. Not sure where it came from but there are some thoughts on it. Come and see the progress but please stay off the property and the N/S right of way too!!! Be a responsible railfan.
the LE&W Depot is open on Saturdays, 1-4 for you to visit the 1880's
LE&W/NKP depot. We do have some merchandise for sale including
children's items, t-shirts and a nylon "tent" train engine, perfect for
that special child in your life.
new just added to the Iron Triangle area is the addition of a scanner.
Michael Harvey, St. Marys, OH was extremely generous and donated the
equipment. FRPS still has some tweaking to do but you can sit in front
of the D&N building, 420 Columbus Ave., across from the rail park, and
enjoy the scenery. Thank you to Michael !!!!!!!!!
The April 25 Railroad Employees Reunion was wonderful and attended by many. Matt VanHattem, Trains Magazine Senior Editor was an outstanding speaker. Matt was also in Fostoria on Friday and interviewed the city engineer Dan Thornton and Dave Whitta of Whitta Construction, the railpark contractor. Expect to see a nice article on Fostoria in Trains Magazine both on the internet copy and hard copy. Thanks Matt for coming back to Fostoria!!
